Hello readers!
Writing community discussion on the hows and whens of going paid on Substack yields a few different perspectives on things. Some have a long-game strategy of building a very large, dedicated audience of hundreds, if not thousands of free signups as they stack their arsenal of content. Then, when the time is right, they flick the switch. Others hold “free content always” as their edict. It’s not about the money, but the love of the craft. Besides, none of us were quitting our day jobs.
I leapt into writing online this time last year. My first Medium article details that process. I was conflicted for a long time and believed I didn’t have room to be a writer. That changed with therapy, joining a writing group, and sharing my work in that group. Hungry and unwilling to waste any more time being hesitant, the paid option was put on before I even had a single view.
It’s that unintentional bravery that is the reason you’re here. That, and the collection of work I’ve been building.
