"Lastly, white supremacy exists. Sorry to shit on anyone’s bonfire, but systems that to this day deny black people bank loans, subject them to more jail time for the same crimes as white cohorts, and narrow beauty standards are only sprinklings of white supremacy. It also tells us that I am simply angry instead of disappointed and hurt. It tells us that once “sketchy” neighborhoods are actually really cool now that they’re being revitalized. We never ask what made them sketchy or why they now have value."
When you said, “I’m not doing any work for anyone who insists on disingenuous discourse and whose main objective is to trap and exhaust me.” phewww, this!
Hell yeah! Well said, although I feel personally attacked by "multisyllabic."
I find the whole "liberal bubble" diss kind of strange. Sure, I suppose I live in one, but how is it any more of a bubble than rural areas that are homogeneously white and Christian? Or the Fox News echo chamber or the comment sections of Bari Weiss or whatever interchangeable "free speech/anti-PC" Substack full of "free thinkers" who oddly all think the same thing, which toes the line of right-wing orthodoxy.
I've lived in LA, Chicago, and Toronto, some of the most multicultural cities in North America. While these places have their issues, at least my bubble is diverse and full of many perspectives, walks of life, and people of all kinds of identities and cool backgrounds. I come from a homogenous suburb in Connecticut and went to conservative Catholic middle and high schools, and I can confidently say that the right is no ally to free expression and promoting different ways of being.
this is my first time reading you Chevanne (!), and that line - “I’m not doing any work for anyone who insists on disingenuous discourse and whose main objective is to trap and exhaust me,” is awesome. Really appreciate your perspective here. I’m glad that you’re doing your thing and not giving in to the trolling.
Today someone wanted to get me entangled in a discussion about something I did not want to debate. Reading your letter helped understand why: I also do my homework and read all type of opinions to form my conclusions. I don’t leave anything out, no matter how extreme because I want to get a full picture of what I’m trying to understand. But I cannot be part of every discussion on every topic. Let’s go do our work and make a difference where we can make a difference. Talking is good, taking action is better. 👏
Just got here, and I'm staying.

Hell yeah
All power to you

Whew, go off! *raises glass* here's to staying and doing the work.
Felt this on so many levels. Thank you for putting this into words. I ain't come here to fight. Us showing up is already an act of resistance.
